The “lost descent” papyrus, explained simply
News said a lost account of Jesus’ descent to hell was uncovered. Here is what the fragment more carefully supports—with charts you can share in Scripture Study.
Popular headlines frame the find as a “lost account of Jesus’ descent to hell and resurrection.” A closer reading says: early Christian preacher in Egypt, affirming that Christ alone descended and ascended again. That sits with creedal and 1 Peter–style tradition. It does not displace Matthew–John.

What you can teach safely
- Christ’s victory over death is ancient Christian preaching, not a new discovery.
- Death “swallowing” is classic biblical/homiletic personification.
- The one who descended ascended again—possibly “alone.”
What to hold loosely
- Exact wording of damaged lines (including “Hades”).
- Any continuous Passion or underworld tour narrative.
- Claims that this rivals or completes the four Gospels.
